‘It’s a shame’, says Trump about Bolsonaro’s arrest

‘It’s a shame’, says Trump when informed about Bolsonaro’s arrest United States President Donald Trump said this Saturday (22) that it is “a shame” that former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has been arrested. “Is that what happened? It’s a shame,” said the Republican, after being asked by journalists about his considerations regarding Bolsonaro’s arrest. Bolsonaro was arrested at home this Saturday morning (22) and taken to the Federal Police headquarters in Brasília, following a decision by the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes. The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) agreed with the arrest. The order issued by the minister highlighted risks to public order and signs that Bolsonaro was planning an escape. According to Moraes, the Federal District’s Integrated Monitoring Integration Center reported a violation of Bolsonaro’s electronic ankle bracelet at 0:08. The team that provides Bolsonaro’s security was immediately called by the federal government’s Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration, responsible for the device. The escort then confirmed the violation and made the change at 1:09 am. “The information confirms the condemned man’s intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape, facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son,” said the minister in the decision. Asked what instrument he had used on the ankle bracelet, the former president stated that he had used a soldering iron to try to open the equipment. Bolsonaro also said that he had started working with the device late Friday afternoon. Furthermore, the minister considered that a vigil of supporters called by senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) in front of his father’s house could cause turmoil and facilitate a possible escape. Moraes said that the summons “poses a very high risk to the effectiveness of the house arrest decreed and puts public order and the effectiveness of criminal law at risk.” The minister wrote that, although the act was presented as a vigil for Bolsonaro’s health, “the conduct indicates the repetition of the modus operandi of the criminal organization led by the aforementioned defendant”, with the use of demonstrations to obtain “personal advantages” and “cause turmoil”.
