This Tuesday (18), Japan faced the worst fire in more than 50 years. The fire destroyed more than 170 homes and caused one death. One person is missing.
Residents of the Saganoseki district, in the Oita region, about 770 km from Tokyo, had to flee the area to an emergency shelter. At least 175 residents lost their homes in the fire. As many of them were made of wood, the flames spread quickly and reached a forested area close to the neighborhood.
The flames also spread to forested areas close to the city and to an uninhabited island more than a kilometer off the coast, probably because of the strong winds in the region.
The case led to power cuts in around 300 homes in the district, according to the company responsible for distribution in the area.
The fire was only controlled this Wednesday (19) after an intense operation by the Fire Department and the Japanese Military Forces. The causes of the fire are still unknown and the number of victims and homeless people could be even greater.
