This Tuesday (18), the Chamber of Deputies approved the basic text of the anti-faction bill, which toughens the fight against organized crime across the country. The proposal, sent by the Lula government and reported by deputy Guilherme Derrite (PP-SP), advanced after intense dispute between Planalto’s allies and the opposition.
The scoreboard recorded 370 votes in favor, 110 against and three abstentions. Despite approval, deputies will still analyze the highlights, which may alter parts of the proposal before sending it to the Senate.
In the Senate, the project will be reported by Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), as announced by the President of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). The expectation is that the debate will progress quickly.
The text provides for stricter rules against factions such as the PCC, the Red Command and militia groups. Furthermore, it establishes higher penalties for crimes committed by members of these organizations.
The punishment for homicides committed by members of factions or militias now ranges from 20 to 40 years. Today, the Penal Code provides for imprisonment of between 12 and 30 years for this type of crime.
The expanded sentence also affects criminals who exercise “structured social dominance”, that is, who control territories through intimidation, violence and threats to the population in areas without an effective State presence.
