Argentine court annuls trial of medical team accused of negligence in Diego Maradona’s death The Argentine court dismissed judge Julieta Makintach this Tuesday (18) for having participated in a clandestine documentary about the trial of Diego Maradona’s death, while she was still part of the court. The scandal led to the annulment of the process. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp The court, made up of judges, lawyers and legislators from the province of Buenos Aires, unanimously decided that Makintach is also prevented from holding new positions in the Justice Department. She is 48 years old and did not attend the hearing held in La Plata, about 60 km from the capital. The case came to light in May, when the trial of Maradona’s medical team — accused of negligence in the former player’s death in 2020 — was still ongoing. Images showed Makintach as the protagonist of a documentary about the process itself. At the time, the judge was removed. “What has been proven with this debate and evidence is the enormous damage caused to the justice system of the province and Argentina, which has been ridiculed,” said Guillermo Sagués, president of the San Isidro lawyers’ college, who participated in the prosecution, after the decision. In the room were Verónica Ojeda, Maradona’s former teammate, and Diego, their 12-year-old son. They hugged after the verdict. Lawyer Mauro Baudry, who represents the family, said he hopes that the focus will now return to the new trial of the seven accused of murder. “What had to be done was done, today we shouldn’t be talking about that, but rather judging Diego Maradona’s murderers”, he told the press upon leaving the court. During the political trial, Attorney General Analía Duarte accused Makintach of lying, pressuring witnesses and using public resources for his own benefit. After the mistrial for the death of the football star, the start date for the new process was set for March 17th. ‘Divine justice’ Diego Maradona during a press conference in Marseille, France, February 2009 AP Photo/Claude Paris “Returning to believing in Argentine justice is a relief in the heart. In the midst of so much shit, returning to trust is already a lot”, wrote Gianinna, one of Maradona’s daughters, on her Instagram. In previous hearings, Makintach had asked for acquittal. “I was wrong and I could never realize that this private material would have these monumental consequences. I ask the family for forgiveness,” he had said. The dismissed judge claimed that she agreed to give an interview without knowing that they would make a documentary about the case. However, the court granted the prosecutor’s request, which accused her of lying and allowing the film crew to enter the courtroom. The group captured images of the hearings for a documentary entitled “Divine Justice”, whose ‘trailer’ was found in searches. In it, Makintach was seen “parading” through the halls of the court, as the prosecutor who defended his dismissal later accused. The discovery of unauthorized audiovisual material ruined more than 20 court hearings and 44 testimonies, including those of Maradona’s daughters, Dalma, Gianinna and Jana, who will have to testify again.
