Italian court schedules extradition hearing for Carla Zambelli

by Marcelo Moreira

The Italian court has set the date for the hearing that will analyze the extradition request of licensed deputy Carla Zambelli, who has been imprisoned in Italy since July. The parliamentarian will be tried on November 27th, at the Court of Appeal in Rome.

This will be the first decision by the Italian court on Brazil’s request for Zambelli to be sent back to the country. At the decisive hearing, the representative of the Public Ministry will be the first to speak, followed by the representative of Brazil and the defense of the deputy, who must reinforce the thesis of political persecution. Zambelli can speak if he wants.

The decision will be up to the judges of the Court of Appeal, but both parties can appeal. The Italian Public Ministry had already declared that it was in favor of extradition to Brazil, as requested by the Brazilian government. The body argues that all legal requirements for extradition exist, without any impeding reasons.

Remember the Case

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) accepted, on June 3, the complaint from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and made defendants the deputy Carla Zambelli (PL–SP) and the hacker Walter Delgatti Neto. The process is being reported by minister Alexandre de Moraes. Between February and May 2025, the PGR formalized the request for conviction of the two, accusing them of invading judicial systems and falsifying official documents.

The complaint states that Zambelli was the author of the attack on the National Justice Council (CNJ) system. According to the Public Ministry, she recruited Delgatti and offered advantages in exchange for carrying out the plan, whose objective would be to delegitimize the Judiciary and obtain political gains.

The fraud involved the tampering with credentials, improper access to confidential CNJ systems and the creation of false documents, such as an arrest warrant and a blocking order worth R$22.9 million, allegedly against minister Alexandre de Moraes.
