The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, in Washington, this Thursday (13), on which the Brazilian government tried again to overturn the 50% tariff on its products entering the North American country.
However, as in previous times, the countries did not reach an immediate agreement.
Rubio even published a photo with the Brazilian chancellor on his social networks with a vague message about the meeting.
“Today I met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, at the State Department. We discussed matters of mutual importance and a framework of reciprocity for the commercial relationship between the US and Brazil.” No details were released about the conversations between the two authorities.
Vieira, in turn, said in a press conference after the meeting that he presented the United States with a “general proposal” on November 4 to deal with tariffs and that Rubio demonstrated a willingness to respond between this Friday (14) and next week if the United States agrees to a provisional agreement.
Vieira detailed in a press conference in the United States that he presented the formal response to Donald Trump’s government on a list of several topics raised by the White House in October. In response, Rubio reportedly said he will consider the proposals with “all due attention.”
Brazil requested a temporary pause on tariffs in this provisional agreement, which could last two to three months, to later discuss the specificities in each sector linked to trade.
According to the Brazilian, the initial idea of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is to build a “road map” for broader subsequent negotiations.
Lula’s representative also said that Rubio informed the meeting that he was advised by Trump to move quickly with trade negotiations. The chancellor highlighted that, at the moment, the proposal is in the hands of the White House.
This was the third meeting between Brazilian and American authorities since the imposition of tariffs in August and the first at the State Department, in front of cameras, which adds extra weight to the negotiations.
Trump and Lula also spoke via videoconference and met in Malaysia, both contacts made in October. For now, the United States has not reduced tariffs and removed sanctions on Brazilian authorities, such as Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), demands made by the PT member in meetings.
