Russian attack takes down government and company websites in Denmark

A cyber attack affected several official Danish government websites and services this Thursday (13), causing temporary interruptions to public portals and business platforms. According to the agency Europa Press ea AFPthe attack was claimed by the pro-Russian group NoName057(16), which claimed to have carried out a denial of service (DDoS) offensive against Danish government systems and companies.

According to the Danish Civil Protection Agency, the targets included ministries, public portals and defense and technology companies such as the Ministry of Transport, digital services portal Borger.dk and aerospace company Terma. The latter confirmed to the AFP which detected “unauthorized access attempts”, but guaranteed that there was no data breach or damage to security.

The attacks also hit the municipalities of Tårnby, Ishøj, Gentofte and Rødovre, as well as the companies GN Store Nord and Gyldendal, according to the portal. The Local Denmark. In a statement, Terma spokesman Tobias Brun-Falkencrone stated that the company reacted quickly to contain the offensive.

“We are well prepared to deal with this type of cyber attack. We acted immediately and there was no loss of data,” he told AFP.

Public Security Minister Torsten Schack Pedersen warned the Danish broadcaster News that the attacks could intensify in the coming days, especially on the eve of the municipal and regional elections, scheduled for November 18th. According to him, the government works in cooperation with the Defense Intelligence Service to strengthen the protection of critical digital infrastructure.

The newspaper The Straits Timesfrom Singapore, highlighted that the cyber offensive was related to Denmark’s support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. Denial of service attacks are used to overload servers and block access to official websites.

Still according to Europa Pressthe affected services were reestablished a few hours later and there was no evidence of theft of sensitive information. The Danish government maintains heightened vigilance in the face of possible new incidents, in coordination with technology companies and cyber defense experts.

Last week, the group NoName057(16) also attacked the Belgian Intelligence Service website, in a similar episode. According to the public broadcaster VRTthe attack was in retaliation for statements by the Belgian Defense Minister about a possible NATO response to Russian aggression.
