A Russian Aerospace Forces Su-30SM fighter jet crashed Thursday in the Republic of Karelia, located in northwestern Russia. The accident occurred in the Prionezhsky district near Petrozavodsk.

The military fighter jet crashed in a forested area near the local airport, Russian Telegram channels SHOT and 112 reported. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the two crew members on board died at the moment of impact.

The aircraft belonged to the 159th Guards Combat Aviation Regiment of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which operates at Besovets Airfield outside Petrozavodsk.

This regiment is part of the 105th Mixed Aviation Division of the 6th Aerospace and Air Defense Corps of the Western Military District of Russia, and operates Su-27 and Su-30SM fighter aircraft, using it for air defense missions and advanced training.
