STJD absolves Bruno Henrique from suspensive effect

by Marcelo Moreira

This Thursday (13), Flamengo player Bruno Henrique was acquitted by the Superior Court of Justice and Sports (STJD) for his alleged involvement in sports betting. As a result, the 12-game suspension was reversed. However, he suffered a punishment of R$100,000.

The majority of members of the STJD Full Court concluded that there was insufficient evidence to convict the athlete for infractions related to sporting ethics. The trial generated divergent opinions among the nine members of the Plenum: six voted to acquit Bruno Henrique, two defended an increase in the sentence and one chose to maintain the previous conviction.

In September, Bruno Henrique had been sentenced to 12 games suspended and a fine of R$60,000 due to his involvement in a betting manipulation scheme. However, the player’s defense, together with Flamengo, managed to obtain a suspensive effect on this decision, allowing the attacker to continue to play in matches until the case was reevaluated.

Until the session resumes, the suspensive effect remains in effect. Bruno Henrique is accused of having forced a yellow card in a move against which he committed an infraction against the Venezuelan athlete, Yeferson Soteldo during a match against Santos, in Brasília, valid for the 2023 Brazilian Championship.
