Police are questioning the truck driver, a man in his 60s who was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Bucheon police officer Son Byeong-sam. According to Park Geum-cheon, an employee at the local fire department, witnesses reported that the vehicle initially reversed for about 28 meters before advancing 150 meters, hitting pedestrians along the way. The driver said the truck had a mechanical failure, and authorities are reviewing security camera footage, Park said. The left front part of the vehicle was destroyed and the windows were shattered. The truck was later removed for forensic examination. Bucheon City Hall will help with the recovery of damaged facilities, Mayor Cho Yong-eek said in a statement, adding that the city will also carry out safety inspections and offer psychological support to traders and others who witnessed the accident. Cho’s office did not, at this time, have an estimate of the material damage, including the number of stores affected.
