The Senate’s CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) approved the reappointment of Paulo Gonet for another term as head of the PGR (Attorney General’s Office). A vote in the Senate plenary is still necessary, which should take place today. If approved in plenary, Gonet will be the Attorney General of the Republic until 2027.
At the CCJ, approval was given by 17 votes in favor and 10 against. In the Senate, reappointment is on the agenda for the day in the plenary, where it will be necessary to reach an absolute majority of votes, that is, at least 41 votes in favor.
In 2023, also nominated by Lula, Gonet had the support of the opposition in the Senate and was approved by 23 votes in favor and only 4 against. Now, with the accusations against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the group was critical of the prosecutor and signaled during the hearing that it would not vote for reappointment.
