This Wednesday (29), protesters gathered in front of the Guanabara Palace, the seat of the government of Rio de Janeiro, to protest against the deaths recorded in the mega police operation in the Penha and Alemão complexes.
A group of 100 motorcyclists left Praça São Lucas, in Complexo da Penha and headed towards the Palace. They are being escorted by police officers from the Military Police’s Mobile Tactical Battalion.
119 people died in the operation. Among the victims, 115 are suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and four are police officers. The number of deaths in the operation has already surpassed the total recorded in the Carandiru massacre, in 1992, in São Paulo, becoming one of the most lethal police actions in the country’s recent history. Authorities say the number could rise.
On Wednesday morning, residents of the region exposed the bodies in Complexo da Penha, where they themselves found them in the middle of the forest.
Still this Wednesday (29), Castro will meet with the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, who will present a proposal from the Federal Government to assist the state of Rio.
