The mega police operation in Rio de Janeiro against the advance of the criminal faction Comando Vermelho (CV) resulted in 64 confirmed deaths. However, the number may exceed 100, after 62 bodies were taken by residents of Complexo da Penha to Praça São Lucas.
The bodies were laid out in a kind of line, which stretched across the entire José Rucas Road, one of the main roads in the region. Some of the dead had gunshot marks on the back of their heads, while others had stab marks.
The operation is the most lethal in the history of Rio de Janeiro. According to a report released by the local government, 60 criminals and four civil military police died during the action.
