President Lula (PT) stated that he was very grateful for the meeting “that seemed impossible” with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. The meeting between the two leaders took place this Sunday (26), in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, during the Leaders’ Summit of the Association of Southwest Asian Nations (Asean).
Lula highlighted the long 22-hour journey he and Trump faced to get to Malaysia. “And we managed to hold a meeting, which seemed impossible in Brazil and in the United States, here in Malaysia”, concluded the Brazilian president during a speech at the business meeting.
The meeting between the leaders lasted around 45 minutes. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, during the closed-door conversation, Trump signaled the possibility of suspending the tariffs applied to Brazil. Vieira also informed that a new meeting between representatives of the two governments is scheduled for this Sunday night.
Trump says he is bothered by Bolsonaro’s penalties
On Saturday (25), Trump had already declared that the United States could reduce tariffs imposed on Brazil, if there were “appropriate circumstances”. In a brief conversation with journalists before the official meeting, the American president was asked whether one of these conditions would be a review of the sentences against former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
In response, Trump stated that this was none of the journalists’ business and added that he likes Bolsonaro. “He’s a good guy. We were bothered by the sentences against him,” he added. According to the Brazilian government, the topic was not on the meeting’s agenda.
