The government of United States President Donald Trump is evaluating the creation of a new generation of warships, called Golden Fleet (“Golden Fleet”), according to a report published this Friday (24) by Wall Street Journal.
The initiative, still in the initial phase of discussion between the White House and the US Navy, seeks to replace part of the current fleet with larger vessels equipped with long-range missiles, designed to face growing threats from China and other strategic adversaries.
According to the publication, Trump has personally participated in conversations about the project and shown interest in redesigning United States naval power. The plan envisages the construction of heavily armored and technologically advanced ships, with a displacement of between 15,000 and 20,000 tons and the capacity to carry more powerful weapons, including hypersonic missiles.
The American Navy currently has 287 vessels, including destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers and submarines, and is developing a new class of frigates. THE Golden Fleet it would also include smaller corvettes, according to sources cited by the newspaper.
O Wall Street Journal remember that the proposal marks yet another direct foray by Trump into modernizing the US Navy. THE Golden Fleet it is seen by the Republican president as a way to expand the supremacy of the United States on the seas.
During his time as US president, Trump, according to the White House, “did more than anyone else to strengthen American maritime dominance.” The Republican already had plans to increase the number of US military vessels to more than 300, something that could be put into practice in his last term.
