German Defense Minister on official visit to Ottawa Boris Pistoriusand the Norwegian Minister Torre Sandvikheld talks with Canadian authorities to discuss Ottawa’s possible participation in the program, which already has six ships on order from Germany and four from Norway. Canada plans to acquire up to 12 new submarines to replace its existing fleet, and is currently competing with South Korea’s Hanwha TKMS for the multibillion-dollar contract.
Pistorius said Germany is seeking to strengthen its industrial ties with Canada, and noted discussions that include negotiating a compensation agreement that would potentially introduce Lockheed Martin Canada’s CMS 330 combat management system across the German fleet. Germany also plans to acquire at least 18 Bombardier Global aircraft, possibly equipped with Sweden’s Saab’s GlobalEye surveillance system. The minister also mentioned plans for cooperation in the fields of energy, raw materials and space technology, with investments expected to amount to 35 billion euros.
According to Minister Pistorius, the Type 212CD is on schedule and within budget, with production of up to four ships per year scheduled from 2027. The minister highlighted the model’s technological advantages, including stealth capabilities and advanced propulsion systems that enable long submergence. It said Canada’s participation represents a strategic partnership of up to 50 years, including joint construction, maintenance, crew exchanges and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
