No program Latest Analysis this Thursday (24)the guests evaluated President Lula’s stance on his trip to Indonesia, on the eve of a likely meeting with Donald Trump in Malaysia. The PT member decided to take a risk and raise his tone against the Republican and, instead of proposing a negotiation, he thought it better to provoke. Criticism of unilateralism, defense of the “Global South” and even a new international currency returned to PT rhetoric, intensifying tension with the USA.
For writer Francisco Escorsim, such discourse is an old tactic of the left. “This speech has to do with not becoming dependent on the United States. But, deep down, if it were dependence on another country, the speech would be different. It is important to have a strong international currency, as long as it is from China or Russia”, he assesses.
Furthermore, Lula announced, this Thursday, that he is prepared to contest other elections and that he will run for a fourth term in the next presidential election. “Will he be able to stay in power for another four years? To resolve this doubt, he will try to use any sanction from Trump to elevate himself. He will push Brazil aside and become ‘shirt number 10′”, said councilor Guilherme Kilter.
STF reform on the agenda
Some proposals for structural reforms are being processed in the National Congress that could impact the STF. Among them, the issue of replacing lifetime positions, currently in force, with limited terms of office, between 8 and 15 years, is being discussed. Furthermore, the Chamber of Deputies approved PL 3640/23, which regulates the constitutional process and, among the changes, limits the use of monocratic decisions.
FGV professor Daniel Vargas criticized the lifetime position of STF minister. “If you appoint a great minister, he can make a great contribution. But if you appoint a bad minister with a breadth of powers, with the ability to make practically infinite monocratic decisions, we all collectively pay a huge bill”, he states.
Jorge Messias’s profile
Increasingly considered to succeed the seat left by Luís Roberto Barroso, the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, has already expressed controversial political positions. In his doctoral thesis, Messias wrote that agricultural activities operate in a “colonial logic” with accelerated deforestation and the use of pesticides. “I came here to tell you something very important: it has affected you, it has affected us now”, he also declared at an event organized by the MST.
“Agricultural production is responsible for a considerable portion of the GDP that guarantees the stability of our trade balance. I think it would be valuable for this Messiah thesis to be discussed by congressmen in a hearing, so that we can hear what he really thinks”, highlights Vargas.
