The American government has removed sanctions imposed on Venezuela’s interim dictator, Delcy Rodríguez, according to an update on the website of the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac).
The reason for the change was not disclosed and comes almost three months after the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro in an American special forces operation in Caracas.
Rodríguez had been sanctioned since 2018 on accusations of corruption and human rights violations. With the suspension of the measure, her assets in the USA are no longer frozen and she can now once again carry out transactions with American citizens and companies.
Since taking power in place of Chavismo’s “number 1”, she has won support from President Donald Trump to remain in Venezuela’s leadership. Days ago, the Republican said he hopes to find someone “like Delcy” for Iran.
This Wednesday, the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that the South American country’s recovery favors the USA and that Venezuela will soon undergo new “fair and free” elections.
