US President Donald Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi this Thursday (2), who will be replaced on an interim basis by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.
According to the The New York Timesthe dismissal of the Republican administration’s top judicial official comes amid growing frustration with her performance in office, especially due to the Justice Department’s crisis regarding the files on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and the slowness in prosecuting the president’s political critics.
In the post this afternoon, Trump praised Bondi’s work, describing her as “a great American patriot and a loyal friend, who has served faithfully as Attorney General over the past year.” According to the Republican leader, she will soon take on a new job that is “very necessary and important in the private sector.” He did not provide details about the new role.
Despite public praise, the The Wall Street Journal revealed that the president had been complaining about the former prosecutor’s handling of FBI files related to Epstein, for creating months of political and personal headaches for him. Bipartisan pressure also led to Bondi being subpoenaed by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee earlier this month.
Bondi, 60, began publicly supporting Trump in the early 2010s when she was Florida’s attorney general, and within the cabinet he appointed in January 2025, she has been considered one of the president’s most loyal figures. Blanche, 51, represented several figures close to Trump, such as the former mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani, and also represented Trump in the case related to the Republican’s secret payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
This is the second high-level dismissal of Trump’s second term. In March, Trump fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, known as the “ICE Barbie.”
