Trump announces tariffs of up to 100% on imported medicines

by Syndicated News

Donald Trump’s administration announced this Thursday (2) that it will impose tariffs of up to 100% on some imported medicines, in order to pressure drug manufacturers to produce within the USA.

According to the White House statement, the measure will apply to patented medicines that are currently manufactured in countries without tariff agreements with the US and by companies that do not have “most favored nation pricing” (MFN) contracts with the government.

The new charges will come into effect within 120 days for large pharmaceutical companies and 180 days for smaller ones.

According to the document, medicines that are produced by companies that commit to carrying out some manufacturing stage in the USA will have their imports taxed at 20% and, after entering the MFN, this rate will be completely reduced. The fee exemption will be valid until January 20, 2029.

The Republican ruler had already threatened to impose charges on foreign pharmaceutical companies last year.
