NASA released this Friday (3) the first image of Earth captured by the Artemis II crew — a record that marks the return of human beings to deep space after 54 years. Commander Reid Wiseman photographed the planet through a window in the Orion capsule, shortly after the engines removed the ship from Earth’s orbit. The image shows auroras in the upper and lower corners, zodiacal light and the African landmass — a rare portrait of our planet seen from afar.
The moment represents more than space nostalgia. Artemis II is a 10-day test flight that validates critical life support, communications and navigation systems outside the protection of Earth’s satellites. Firing the engines placed Orion on a free return trajectory — a path that uses the Moon’s gravity to reduce fuel costs on future missions, making lunar exploration economically viable.
Artemis II opens the doors to a market that is expected to generate trillions of dollars in the coming decades. Companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin and Axiom Space are already developing lunar modules and orbital stations. Lunar mining, space tourism and scientific research stop being science fiction and become a real business opportunity.
Orion will enter lunar orbit at the end of the 5th. The flyby takes place on April 6, a few thousand kilometers from the surface. The closure is scheduled for the 10th, with rescue in the Pacific Ocean.
