The defense asks that the case be postponed until January. Lawyers argue that the defendant will also face another trial, this time in New York state court, for murder, scheduled to begin on June 8. According to the defense, the overlap of the two processes compromises adequate preparation. “Mangione needs to prepare for two complex and serious trials at the same time,” the lawyers wrote in a document sent to the court. That possibility was ruled out in January, when Judge Margaret Garnett dropped the federal murder charge. According to the judge, this charge was incompatible with the two charges of stalking that remain in the case. Even so, Mangione could still be sentenced to life in prison in the federal case.
