Iranian regime says it will continue supplying fertilizers to Brazil

Iran’s top diplomat in Brazil, Abdollah Nekounam, said at a press conference this Tuesday (31) that trade agreements involving the sale of fertilizers to the country will not cease with the ongoing war in the Middle East.

According to the ambassador, goods requested by national agribusiness companies will not be prevented from shipping to Brazil.

“A few months ago we started exporting urea fertilizer to Brazil with some companies in the activity. […] Until now and in the current scenario, the products that were acquired by Brazil will not have any problem being exported”, he said.

Nekounam highlighted that Brazilian buyers must make purchases directly with Iranian transporters.

Although Iran represents less than 1% of fertilizer imports entering Brazilian territory, business is equivalent to 79% of all trade between the countries.

This month, Brazil’s main fertilizer supplier country, Russia, announced the suspension of ammonium nitrate supplies for 30 days due to the global supply crisis caused by the war between the USA, Israel and Iran, which resulted in the blocking of the maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Currently, Brazil imports more than 80% of the fertilizers it consumes. In recent days, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) released a report warning that a possible crisis in the supply of inputs would leave the country “in a position of extreme vulnerability”.
