Iran executes another protester from January protests

by Syndicated News

Iranian authorities announced this Thursday (2) the execution of another prisoner convicted for his participation in the protests that took place in the Persian country between the end of December and January, alleging that he set fire to a military installation.

“Amir Hossein Hatami, one of the enemy’s terrorist elements in the January riots, who along with some other protesters tried to take possession of weapons by entering a military center and destroying it, was hanged this morning,” reported the Mizan news agency, linked to the Iranian Judiciary.

The agency claimed that the executed man took part in an attack on the base of the paramilitary group Basij Kaveh on Damavand Street in Tehran, which was destroyed.

At trial, Hatami was sentenced to death and confiscation of his assets, a sentence that was upheld by the Supreme Court, according to Mizan.

Iranian state agencies have reported that at least nine executions have been carried out by the Iranian regime in recent weeks, but the number of capital punishment applications is likely much higher, as many cases are not publicized by the Islamic dictatorship.

Hatami had been mentioned by Amnesty International as one of the members of a group of seven protesters and dissidents who were about to be executed in Iran.

In a statement released on Tuesday (31), the NGO stated that “the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran continue to use the death penalty as a weapon to eradicate dissenting voices and further terrorize the population” even in the midst of the regime’s war against the USA and Israel.

Amnesty International said the protesters were “convicted in extremely unfair trials that relied on forced ‘confessions’ obtained under torture and lasted just a few hours.”

The anti-government protests in January, which called for the end of the regime, were contained through brutal repression that caused the deaths of 3,117 people, according to the official report.

However, human rights organizations such as HRANA, based in the United States, have estimated the total number of deaths at more than 7,000 and continue to verify another 11,000 cases, while estimating the number of detainees at 53,000.

Iran is one of the leading countries in the world in terms of number of executions and, in 2025, it hanged 1,500 people, according to UN data, which represents a 50% increase compared to the previous year.
