Inflatable boat sinks and leaves 19 dead in Turkey Sozcu Gazetesi Eighteen migrants drowned this Wednesday (19) after an inflatable boat sank in the Aegean Sea, near the tourist city of Bodrum, in southwestern Turkey. According to the Turkish Coast Guard, 21 people were rescued alive during the search and rescue operation. “The inflatable boat refused to stop and fled at high speed before starting to sink,” the corporation said in a statement. The vessel was located around 6 am (0 am in Brasília). After the searches, agents recovered the bodies of 18 victims. Bodrum is close to several Greek islands, such as Kos, one of the main entry points for migrants into the European Union, less than five kilometers from the Turkish coast. Crossings like this are frequent in the region, considered one of the main migratory routes towards Europe. Travel, often carried out in precarious and overcrowded vessels, involves a high risk of shipwrecks. According to the International Organization for Migration, at least 831 migrants have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean since the beginning of this year. See the videos that are trending on g1
