Vanderbilt’s creation was “an American castle, built on the scale of a European palace,” according to the book Biltmore House: The Interiors and Collections of George W. Vanderbilt (“Biltmore House: The Interior and Collections of George W. Vanderbilt”, in free translation), an official history of the house and its interior, written by the property’s chief curator, Darren Poupore, and art historian Laura C. Jenkins, with photographs by William Abranowicz.
