A woman shocked the internet after she shared that the driver’s seat in her 2018 Smart suddenly exploded.
The case was divided by Nathanyaawho posted a video on his TikTok profile to show the extent of the damage. “I remember driving and smelling burnt tires, so when I finished driving I looked at the tires and they looked fine. So I left the car and went home,” she said in the clip.
“How is this happening? I’m really shocked. I bought this car outright. […] If anyone can afford it, please speak up,” Nathanyaa continued, explaining at the same time that the insurance refuses to cover the repair of the vehicle.
In the caption, she added: “The seat in my Smart literally burned inside due to an electrical fault. You can see the wires. I’m really scared to drive again. Insurance says it doesn’t cover. Mercedes-Benz/Smartplease explain?”
Commenting on the video, which has already garnered over 450,000 views, the internet advised Nathanyaa to take the car to a Mercedes-Benz dealer, as the car is produced in collaboration with the Chinese company Geely.
“This is a manufacturer issue,” one TikTok user wrote. “You must go directly to Mercedes and complain,” argued another. “How can that not be covered by insurance? Someone could have died, my God,” lamented a third user.
It is worth noting that Smart-cars are no longer sold in North America, although many models purchased in previous years are still in circulation.
In 2017 decided Mercedes-Benz a class action lawsuit that claimed that the seat heaters in their Smart-cars could overheat due to a copper wiring component inside.
Mercedes did not admit fault but agreed to replace a diverter line on the affected models and offer extended warranty as well as partial refunds for future repairs to those who had not had the repair performed.
Therefore, it seems appropriate for Nathanyaa to contact the manufacturer, inform their representatives of the problem and find out if her problem is covered by an extended warranty or if she will have to pay for the repairs herself.

@nathanyahh4 My Smart car seat literally burned from the inside because of an electrical fault. You can see the wiring, I’m genuinely scared to drive it again 😭 Insurance says they won’t cover it. @Mercedes-Benz/Smart, please explain?? If anyone’s been through this or knows what I should do, I’d really appreciate advice 🫶🏽 #smartcar #mercedesbenz #carsafety #smartcar #carfire ♬ original sound – Nathanyaa
