‘We are waiting for ground troops’, says Iranian foreign minister to the US

War in Iran enters its 7th day with 20 countries involved in some way In an interview with North American broadcaster NBC released this Thursday (5), Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that Iran is prepared for a possible land invasion by United States troops. Analysts predict the US could step up its military operation against Iran in the coming days, but it remains unclear whether that would involve sending ground troops in an invasion aimed at overthrowing the leadership in Tehran. Araghchi also stated that he is “waiting” for the arrival of American troops. “So we can confront them and that would be a disaster for them,” said the chancellor. “The system is working, the commanders have been replaced and the supreme leader will be replaced.” Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, speaks during a press conference in Istanbul, on June 22, 2025. Ozan Kose/AFP Trump says he prefers a ‘good leader’ Also in an interview with NBC, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he prefers a “good leader”. This Thursday (5), the Republican raised the tone of the war with Iran and said that he will “need” to be personally involved in choosing the new supreme leader – a line similar to that seen at the beginning of the year with Venezuela, when an American intervention removed Nicolás Maduro from the presidency. “We want to participate in the process of choosing the person who will lead Iran in the future. We don’t need to go back every five years and do this again and again… Someone who is great for the people, great for the country,” he declared. According to Trump, Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei, is the most likely successor, but stated that he considers the result unacceptable. “Khamenei’s son is unacceptable to me. We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran. They are wasting time. Khamenei’s son is dead weight. I need to be involved in the appointment, as I did with Delcy [Rodriguez] in Venezuela”, said Trump. The Republican declared that he refuses to accept a new Iranian leader who continues Khamenei’s policies, which, according to him, would force the US to return to war “in five years”.
