The President of the United States, Donald Trump, again criticized this Thursday (26) the American allies in NATO for not helping Washington in the war against Iran, which is expected to complete one month on Saturday (28).
“NATO countries did absolutely nothing to help against the lunatic, now militarily decimated nation of Iran. The US doesn’t need anything from NATO, but it will ‘never forget’ this extremely important moment,” wrote the Republican on the Truth Social network.
Trump has been asking other NATO members to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, closed almost entirely by Iran after the start of the conflict with the US and Israel and through which around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passed before the war.
Last Thursday (19), the governments of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, members of NATO, in addition to Japan, released a statement in which they stated that they could help with actions to reopen the crossing.
“We express our willingness to contribute to the necessary efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait,” they stated. “We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning for this.”
However, these countries have not yet indicated how they intend to help and the following day Trump called the other NATO members “cowards”.
Earlier this week, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said that 22 countries are coordinating efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, in a partnership that would include non-alliance nations such as Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
“We are defining what is needed, when it is needed and how to achieve it together,” Rutte said in an interview with Fox News. “As soon as the time is right, we will begin the process.”
