It is unclear what exactly the content of the messages was. This would be the first contact between members of the two countries’ diplomats since the start of the war, on February 28. This Monday, US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran wanted to close a deal. According to sources cited by Axios, Araghchi tried to discuss the end of the war that began earlier. On the other hand, the American official told the website that Washington is “not talking” officially with Tehran. The investigative website Drop Site News reported earlier that Witkoff had sent messages to Araghchi. Iranian officials told the publication that the minister was ignoring the American envoy’s messages. Officially, Iran says it is not negotiating a ceasefire with the United States and Israel. “We don’t see any reason to talk to the Americans now, because when we were talking, they attacked us,” Araghchi said in an interview with CBS News on Sunday (15). This Monday, Tehran said it was prepared to continue the war and take it “as far as necessary.” READ ALSO Trump says he doesn’t know if Iran’s new leader is alive: ‘They told me he lost a leg’ Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s new supreme leader, escaped death ‘by seconds’ in bombing that killed his father, says newspaper UN report says Israeli airstrike on prison in Iran is a war crime Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, speaks during a press conference in Istanbul, on June 22, 2025.
