UN Secretary-General calls for end to war after visit to Lebanon

by Marcelo Moreira

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres went to Beirut, Lebanon. He said he was “deeply saddened” by the situation in the country after visiting some of the hundreds of thousands of displaced people and hospitals where injured civilians are being treated following Israeli attacks. Guterres stated that the south of the country, following Israel’s mass evacuation orders, is at risk of being bombed to total destruction.

The secretary-general’s message was clear: “There is no military solution, only diplomacy.” He also stated that civilians must be protected, that Lebanese sovereignty and territory must be respected and that the war must end.

Guterres launched a $325 million emergency humanitarian appeal to support the Lebanese population. Since the beginning of the month, 826 people have died, according to the Ministry of Health. More than 800,000 people are internally displaced, and 90,000 have fled to Syria.
