The UK and Germany have moved forward with plans to develop a new family of hypersonic, stealthy and long-range cruise missiles.

The UK Defence Journal as reported by the UK Defense Secretary, Luke Pollardmet the German State Secretary for Armaments and Innovation in Berlin, Jens Plötnerrelto review the initiative’s progress.

The program aims to develop weapons capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers, and the systems are expected to enter service in the 2030s.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, the initiative will initially focus on ground-launched missiles, but may later include air-launched and sea-launched versions.

“The relationship between the UK and Germany is extremely strong and we have taken another step forward in developing high-tech missile capabilities,” Pollard said, adding that the joint program is open to additional partners in the future.

“Not only are we equipping our soldiers with the best weapons to represent the strongest possible deterrent against our adversaries, but we are also building an industrial foundation that will ensure both nations remain at the forefront of defense technology.”
