The measure adds to other recent actions by Trump to associate his name with American cultural institutions, such as changing the name of the United States Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center and a new class of warships, among other initiatives. The plans also go hand in hand with an ongoing proposal to emblazon Trump’s face on a commemorative coin. At the beginning of the month, a federal arts commission approved the final design of a 24-karat gold coin with the president’s image, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, on July 4. According to a statement from the Treasury, the new banknotes will also bear the signature of the department’s secretary, Scott Bessent. In a statement, he stated that “there is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country” than with dollar bills bearing Trump’s name. U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said the inclusion of the president’s signature on U.S. currency “is not only appropriate, but also deserved.” In the United States, the production of banknotes is the responsibility of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, while coins are manufactured by the United States Mint.
