Trump would be willing to end war without reopening Hormuz

The American newspaper The Wall Street Journal published this Monday (30) a report indicating that US President Donald Trump had told advisors that he is willing to end the war against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains almost completely blocked.

The crossing was almost completely closed by Iran after the conflict with the US and Israel began on February 28. About 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transited through Hormuz before the war.

According to US government sources interviewed by the WSJ, Trump and his advisers have assessed that an operation to reopen the crossing would extend the war beyond the four to six week period of conflict established by the US president.

In this way, the Republican would have decided that Washington would seek to achieve the objectives of weakening Iran’s Navy and its missile arsenal and reducing current hostilities between the two countries, while the full reopening of Hormuz would be negotiated diplomatically.

If there were no results, Washington would pressure allies in Europe and the Persian Gulf to take on the task of reopening the strait, said the authorities interviewed by the WSJ. Trump and the White House have not yet commented on the matter.

In a post on the Truth Social network this Tuesday (31), Trump pressured allied countries to reopen Hormuz.

“For all countries that cannot obtain jet fuel because of [bloqueio do] Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the beheading of the [regime do] Iran, I have a suggestion: number 1, buy from the US, we have plenty, and number 2, take courage, go to the straits and just TAKE [o petróleo]”, wrote the American president.

“You will have to learn to fight for yourselves, the US will no longer be there to help you, just as you were not there to help us. Iran has essentially been decimated. The hardest part is over. Go get your own oil!”

The American president postponed to April 6th the deadline he had set (and which would expire last Friday, 27th) for the Iranian regime to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz – otherwise, the US will “annihilate” the Iranian energy infrastructure, threatened Trump.

This Tuesday, an attack by Tehran set fire to a large Kuwaiti-flagged oil tanker, near Dubai, whose authorities reported that the flames were controlled and that there were no oil spills or injuries among the crew, according to Reuters.
