Trump says it’s ‘too late’ to negotiate with Iran

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Tuesday (3) that Iran is trying to open dialogue to contain the war in the Middle East, but declared that the conditions no longer allow negotiation.

“Your air defense, your Air Force, your Navy and your leadership are no more. They want to talk. I said, ‘Too late!'” Trump wrote on the Truth Social network, sharing an article favorable to the attacks published by The Washington Post.

The declaration comes amid the military escalation that began on Saturday, when Washington, in coordination with Israel, launched an operation against the Islamic Republic. The offensive resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as hundreds of others, according to reports.

In an interview with The Atlantic magazine, Trump had already stated that Iranian authorities were seeking contact to stop the conflict.

On the Iranian side, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, denied any intention of negotiating and also ruled out plans to directly attack the United States. According to him, the American operation was justified by Washington as a “preventive” action.

Retaliations and deaths

After the bombings, Tehran responded with air strikes against Israel and countries that host American military bases, such as Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

At least six American soldiers have died since the start of the operation against Iran.

Faced with the deteriorating situation, Washington temporarily closed its embassy in Saudi Arabia and suspended diplomatic activities in Kuwait. The government also recommended that American citizens leave 14 Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, Lebanon, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan and Yemen.

Trump said the offensive will continue until Iran’s missile program, Navy and nuclear capabilities are destroyed. The president also warned that the United States did not launch a “big wave” of attacks — which, according to him, could happen “very soon.”
