Trump says he will negotiate with new Iran leadership after attack

by Marcelo Moreira

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Sunday (1st) that he is willing to negotiate with the new leadership of Iran after the death of supreme leader Ali Khamenei, during a joint attack by American and Israeli forces.

“They want to talk, and I agreed to do that, so I will talk to them,” Trump said in an interview with the magazine The Atlantic.

According to the president, the Iranian government was slow to reach an agreement in negotiations over the country’s nuclear program. “They should have done it sooner. They should have done it sooner which was very easy to do. They waited too long,” he said.

Trump did not detail when the new talks should begin and highlighted that some of the Iranian interlocutors with whom Washington was negotiating died in the attacks.

Operation “Epic Fury” advances

In an interview with the American TV network CBC, Trump said that the military operation against Iran, called “Epic Fury”, is evolving more quickly than expected.

The statement comes after the United States Armed Forces confirmed the death of three American soldiers and serious injuries to five others during the offensive.

The joint bombings with Israel began on Saturday, when Khamenei and a significant part of the Iranian military leadership died. This Sunday, new waves of attacks hit Tehran.

Iran began retaliation after attacks

Iran has promised revenge for Khamenei’s death and has already carried out attacks against the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, countries allied with the United States that host American military bases.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump claimed he would keep the United States out of protracted wars abroad. This Sunday’s statements indicate, however, the opening of a new diplomatic chapter amid the military escalation in the Middle East.
