Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump stated that, in the face of war, he feels he needs to remain in the United States. In an interview with the Financial Times, the president pressured China to help reopen oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for global oil trade. “I think China should also help, because 90% of the oil they consume comes from the strait,” Trump told the newspaper. He added that he would prefer to know Beijing’s position on the issue before the trip. According to Trump, the United States government has spoken to around seven countries about military support to protect ships in the region, but none have confirmed formal participation so far. Chinese officials have said the Strait of Hormuz is an essential route for international trade and that keeping the region stable is in the interests of the entire international community. China also stated that it intends to continue dialogue with the countries involved in the conflict and act to reduce tensions.
