The United States Navy has selected military technology company Anduril Industries to participate in a program focused on developing large autonomous submarines.
This initiative is part of the project CAMPcreated by the US Department of Defense to accelerate the development of extra-large autonomous underwater vehicles (XL-AUVs), designed to expand the range and capabilities of long-term underwater missions.
As part of the deal, the company must conduct prolonged demonstrations of autonomous vehicles Dive-XL within up to four months after signing the contract. This trial aims to evaluate the system’s performance in near-real operational conditions, by measuring factors such as endurance, resilience and mission range in the underwater environment.
The selection was made after a competitive process led by the Defense Innovation Unit. According to the company, its autonomous underwater vehicle has logged more than 42,000 kilometers of operation and 6,700 mission hours—data used to prove the reliability and long-term operating capabilities of the platform.
In addition to the new contract with the US Navy, Anduril also highlighted his previous experience in the Ghost Shark program with the Royal Australian Navy. Currently, production of the Dive-XL takes place in Sydney, Australia, while the facility at Quonset Point has been prepared to produce dozens of this platform and hundreds of smaller vehicles annually.
