The project, which NAVAIR led in collaboration with industry partners, included modernizing the avionics, electrical, and navigation systems of an aircraft that previously served U.S. presidential missions before being transferred to Egypt.

The US Navy, through the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), has completed the modernization of a VH-3A Sea King helicopter historically associated with US presidential missions, and is now preparing to return the aircraft to the Egyptian Air Force.

The work was conducted by the PMA-226 Program Office, responsible for specialized and adversary aircraft, in partnership with NAVAIR’s Security Cooperation Office and Clayton International.

According to the official statement, the project was completed in February 2026, and its goal was to modernize an air asset considered important for Egyptian aviation, while at the same time strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

According to NAVAIR, the upgraded aircraft bears the number BuNo 150615, a copy of great historical value. The helicopter was originally delivered to the US Marine Corps to support presidential missions during the terms of John F. Kennedy. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. In 1974, during Nixon’s visit to Egypt, the plane was presented to President Anwar Sadat as a diplomatic gesture, after which it became part of Egyptian aviation.

The recent modernization process combined an old structure with modern systems. Among the improvements mentioned by NAVAIR: a new electrical architecture, a modern avionics package with a glass cockpit, along with improvements in communications and navigation systems.

On February 2, 2026, the Egyptian Air Force conducted a verification and acceptance flight to confirm the performance of the helicopter after the modernization.

After completing the installation of the VIP interior cabin, the VH-3A is expected to be transported again to Egypt, where it will return to service. For NAVAIR, this move also represents a symbol of the continued defense partnership between Washington and Cairo, combining historical value with updated operational capability.

The VH-3A Sea King is an executive transport version derived from the VH-3A Sea King family Sikorsky H-3 Sea Kingwhich was originally developed for naval missions. According to NAVAIR, the VH-3A was a modified version of the short-range presidential transport, and preceded the VH-3D in this role. Official records and historical documents for the aircraft indicate that only eight VH-3A aircraft were built for this VIP transport role, which helps explain the symbolic and historical importance of the aircraft that will be returned to Egypt.
