Tesla has stopped using the “Autopilot” label for its semi-autonomous driving system after the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) threatened to revoke its licenses.

Although the system was a company Tesla called “Autopilot”, it is important to emphasize that the system Full Self-Driving (FSD) is not fully autonomous and requires constant driver supervision.

Despite earlier claims suggesting the vehicle could operate fully autonomously with FSD, even the company’s most advanced system is Tesla classified as Level 2 autonomy. To be considered capable of driving without human supervision, the company would have to demonstrate Level 3 autonomy capability.

The California DMV decided last December to label the company’s semi-autonomous driving system Tesla as “Autopilot” is misleading. The authority has therefore threatened to suspend the company’s license to sell vehicles in the state if the term is not removed from communications and marketing campaigns.

In a statement released Tuesday (17), the California DMV said that “Tesla has successfully taken the necessary steps to end the use of the term ‘Autopilot’ in the marketing of its vehicles in California, as requested by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) last December”.

It will be now Tesla brand their systems with new names, even outside of California. Full Self-Driving will be called “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)“ a Autopilot will bear the name “Traffic Aware Cruise ControlChanges have apparently already been made to the company’s website Tesla.
