Protests took to the streets of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Florianópolis this Sunday (8), the date on which International Women’s Day is celebrated.
The acts were organized by different entities and segments of society, but with a common aim: to fight against femicide in Brazil, which has reached the highest number of cases in the last decade.
In 2025, 1,568 women were murdered due to their gender status, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2024, when there were 1,492 cases. The data comes from the Brazilian Public Security Forum, released on the eve of March 8th.
In Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, the events had as their motto the phrase “Stop killing us” and took place in the same neighborhood where a 17-year-old girl was raped by four men and a teenager.
Protesters wore t-shirts and stickers with phrases such as “no, no”, “I want to live without fear” and “shame needs to change sides”.
In a symbolic act, women planted crosses on the beach in reference to victims of feminicide, under the theme “stop killing us”.
São Paulo also had a great event on Avenida Paulista, highlighting the fight against feminicide, gender equality and tributes to murdered women.
In the center of Porto Alegre, the event was marked by a moment of memory and mourning. Members of a theater group carried women’s shoes while shouting in chorus the names of the 20 women murdered in the state this year alone.
In Florianópolis, the meetings had a socio-educational purpose. In addition to the walk, participants held conversation circles and lectures.
