Russia suspends fertilizer exports; measure affects Brazil

by Marcelo Moreira

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture announced this Tuesday (24) the temporary suspension of licenses for the export of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer widely used in Brazil. The measure, influenced by the war in the Middle East, is initially valid for one month.

Russia, responsible for 40% of global trade in the input, argued that the decision was taken to ensure sufficient domestic stock during the spring planting season. Brazil, in turn, must face higher prices and rationing to maintain agricultural production during the next harvest.

“In the context of growing export demand for nitrogen fertilizers, the suspension of their supply abroad will allow the needs of the domestic market to be prioritized during the spring field work season,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

The ministry detailed that all export licenses already authorized have been revoked and that new requests are suspended until April 21, with the exception of contracts with specific governments that were not mentioned.

Russia frequently exports ammonium nitrate to Brazil, India, Peru, Mongolia, Morocco and Mozambique. ‌
