by Marcelo Moreira

Two ships carrying oil and gas from Russia are on their way to Cuba despite the ongoing energy blockade against the communist island imposed by the United States, the British newspaper reported on Wednesday (18). Financial Times.

According to the publication, the vessels could arrive in the Caribbean country in the next few days, defying the pressure exerted by President Donald Trump’s government to cut off energy supplies to Havana. According to the Financial Timesthe ship Sea Horseflagged in Hong Kong, carries around 27 thousand tons of Russian gas and could dock in Cuba next week. The vessel would have previously changed its route before heading towards the island. The oil tanker Anatoly KolodkinRussian-flagged, carries approximately 100,000 metric tons of Urals crude oil – Russia’s main type of crude oil export – and is expected to arrive in early April.

According to maritime intelligence companies cited by the newspaper, these could be the first energy shipments destined for Cuba in three months. The island is currently facing a severe energy crisis and strong pressure from the US for regime change.

The Trump administration has been pressuring countries and companies not to replace Venezuela as an oil supplier to Havana. The American president has already threatened to impose tariffs on countries that start supplying Cuba and has not ruled out tougher measures, such as seizures of ships that approach the island.
