Russia is providing intelligence information to Iran to locate US assets and military forces in the Middle East, including warships and planes, sources reported this Friday (6) to the newspaper The Washington Post.
Three anonymous officials familiar with Russian intelligence services said Moscow has provided Tehran with several locations that have allowed it to launch precision strikes against American targets in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere.
Since the start of the war seven days ago, Vladimir Putin’s regime has publicly declared that it will not become involved in the conflict. This Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was emphatic in saying that this is not his war and that he will only look out for his own interests.
On the other hand, the new revelations contrast with the Kremlin’s public stance. Moscow condemned the US and Israeli attacks on its ally Iran, but avoided going too deep in criticizing US President Donald Trump, in what many analysts interpret as a need to preserve its negotiating cards with Washington regarding the war in Ukraine.
The assistance, released for the first time this Friday, indicates that the conflict is taking on a new scope, with one of the US’s main nuclear competitors. It was not entirely clear the extent of Russian support for Iran in terms of locating targets.
One of the sources stressed that the effort appeared “quite comprehensive.”
