President of Belarus gives a rifle as a gift to Kim Jong-un The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, presented this Thursday (26) the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un, with an automatic rifle during a summit in Pyongyang. The meeting brings together two of Russia’s main allies in the war against Ukraine. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp “In case enemies emerge!” joked Lukashenko when handing over the weapon, drawing laughter from Kim, who examined the rifle and tested the reloading mechanism. In return, the North Korean leader presented the visitor with a vase made of projectiles, with an image of Lukashenko inlaid. During the visit, the two leaders signed a friendship treaty and reinforced the rapprochement between countries that are under international sanctions and support Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine. North Korea supplied millions of munitions to Russia and sent troops to help Moscow expel Ukrainian forces that occupied part of the Russian region of Kursk in 2024. Belarus allowed its own territory to be used as a base for the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The country later agreed to host Russian tactical nuclear missiles in an area that borders three NATO member countries. The visit marked Lukashenko’s first trip to North Korea in his 33 years in power and comes amid an attempt to balance international relations. While strengthening ties with Moscow’s allies, the leader seeks to reduce tensions with the United States. Last week, Lukashenko met with US President Donald Trump’s envoy, John Coale. After the meeting, Belarus released 250 political prisoners in exchange for a further easing of American sanctions. Belarusian state agency Belta said Lukashenko told Kim that relations between the two countries were entering a “fundamentally new phase.” According to the agency, Kim declared that the two governments share positions on several issues and that they oppose “undue pressure from the West on Belarus”.
