A new report from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec) showed that poverty among Argentina’s urban population fell to its lowest level since 2018, standing at 28.2% in the second half of 2025, a drop of 3.4 percentage points compared to the rate recorded in the first half of last year.
According to the survey, the extreme poverty rate was 6.3% in the second half of 2025, 0.6 percentage points less than that recorded in the previous six months.
In the annual comparison, the poverty rate fell 9.9 percentage points in the second half of last year, while the extreme poverty rate decreased 1.9 percentage points.
The Indec measurement is based on the standard of living in the 31 most populous urban centers in the country, which covers 30 million people, out of Argentina’s total population of approximately 46.4 million.
The drop in the official poverty rate in subsequent semesters is directly related to the slowdown in inflation, which fell from 117.8% in December 2024 to 31.5% last December.
President Javier Milei celebrated the new numbers released. “Poverty continues to decline. Numbers in the report. MAGA!”, he wrote in X.
The Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, highlighted the fact that the data is the lowest in seven years and the influence of the policies implemented by the current government. “The marked reduction in poverty and extreme poverty is due to economic growth, the disinflation process and the strengthening of social programs without intermediaries since the beginning of the government.”
