The U.S. Army plans to begin production of the next-generation M1E3 Abrams tank as early as next year, but the schedule may depend on the performance of early prototypes in operational testing that is scheduled to begin soon.

These assessments will be conducted by military units and are expected to help determine final adjustments prior to mass production.

The M1E3 was previewed at the Detroit Auto Show in January and shows significant changes compared to the previous version. Key improvements include structural improvements that reduced the crew from four to three through the introduction of a fuel-efficient hybrid propulsion system, a new hull, unmanned turret, and automatic loading system.

The project also integrates the latest technologies to enhance mobility, protection and situational awareness. These include adjustable hydraulic suspension, a distributed vision system with cameras placed around the vehicle, augmented reality integration and new sensors. Armament will still be based on a 120mm gun, but may also include machine guns, grenade launchers and remote control systems equipped with anti-tank missiles, along with additional firing systems.

Another key feature is the introduction of advanced protection systems such as Iron Fist, which can intercept threats such as missiles and drones. The weight, estimated at about 60 tons, is lighter than the existing version and aims to improve logistics and operational mobility.

The model will undergo further adjustments depending on the results of field testing, but if the planned schedule is maintained, it could herald the introduction of a new generation of armored vehicles into service in the next few years.
