New ethnic unity law puts even more pressure on minorities in China

China, a multi-ethnic state with 1.4 billion inhabitants, officially recognizes 56 ethnic groups, of which 55 are classified as minorities. The largest group, the Han Chinese, represents 92% of the population, with almost 1.2 billion people. Their language, Mandarin, is the country’s official language.
