Mercedes G63 Convertible: It’s Happening

by Marcelo Moreira

  • Mercedes-AMG is making a G63 Cabriolet.
  • Mercedes will sell it in the United States, too.
  • The automaker will sell it in the United States starting in 2028.

Before the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible, and the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet, which you can get with a manual, there was the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet. Mercedes began building G-Class convertibles in 1979, but the two-door drop-top never reached America before production ended over a decade ago. That will change in 2028.

According to a new Automotive News report, Mercedes-AMG’s new G63 Cabriolet, with four doors, will go on sale in the United States. Mercedes allegedly revealed the drop-top SUV and several other vehicles at a meeting of US and Canadian dealers in Germany.

The automaker first confirmed it would add a G-Class convertible to its lineup last September, before publishing several photos of a camouflaged prototype. At the time, Mercedes said it would sell the SUV in most markets worldwide, including the US, but it was unclear when it would arrive.

AN’s report also reveals that production of the G63 Cabriolet will begin in the third quarter of 2027 at Mercedes’ factory in Graz, Austria. The SUV will retain the boxy shape of the hardtop version, with the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter mild-hybrid V8 engine under the hood, likely making the same 577 horsepower.

Motor1’s Take: Mercedes has big plans to increase its sales in America as it seeks to dethrone BMW and crack 400,000 sales, with several new models in the pipeline. We doubt the G63 Cabriolet will contribute much to those goals, but we can guarantee Mercedes will sell every single one they build.
