The Venezuelan opposition leader and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, María Corina Machado, stated this Sunday (1st) that she will return to Venezuela “in a few weeks” with the aim of promoting an “orderly, sustainable and unstoppable” democratic transition. The statement was made in a video released on his social networks during his stay in the United States.
In the video, Corina said that her mission will be to seek a “great national agreement” to reestablish governability in the country and prepare the ground for “a new and gigantic electoral victory”. According to her, this return is also the desire of hundreds of thousands of exiled Venezuelans around the world.
Maria Corina harshly criticized the current government, accusing its members of persecution, torture, disappearances, murders and expropriations during years of authoritarian administration. She argues that the democratic transition will only be possible with political unity and broad participation by society.
During her stay in the United States, the opposition leader met with several political actors, including American President Donald Trump, the Secretary of State, and legislators, to whom she presented her vision for a democratic and stable Venezuela.
Way back and political context
Maria Corina left Venezuela last December on a trip that took her first to Norway to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and, more recently, to the United States. His departure came while facing threats of arrest in the country.
The planned return takes place in a context of intense political mobilization following the capture of then-president Nicolás Maduro by the United States in early January — an event that profoundly altered the Venezuelan political landscape and raised expectations among sectors of the opposition for structural changes.
Machado promises that his return will be a milestone in consolidating a transition process that respects the popular will and pave the way for free and democratic elections, placing the Venezuelan issue once again at the center of the international debate.
